I have recently seen these at an auction, can anyone tell me what the orange marking is on these used stamps? Is it part of a marking from a registered cover? Does it negatively affect the value of these stamps?

Thanks

The orange marking is crayon and was used on Registered mail. It dors not decrease the value and in fact can make the stamp more attractive to the right buyer.

Canada also used crayon markings during WWI to cancel bank instruments such as checks which had postage stamps applied as a form of paying a tax for the war effort.

I have to disagree. I think most US collectors would view the crayon marking as a significant problem. It's consistent with parcel or registry use (though I'm a bit surprised to see a dated postmark on the $4 value).

Hi all

How would one go about removing crayon marks on these or other stamps?

This is only a what if type question, I'm against removing cancels totally.

The only real way to remove the crayon is to place a paper towel on either side of the stamp and use an iron to heat it and draw the wax into the towels. I have never done it to a stamp but I have done it with a book. I would not recommend it but it can be done. There in all likelihood will still be some residual wax left.

I would leave them alone, they are legitimate postal markings.

Columbians with crayon seem to do just fine.

Crayon or Not.......I would love to be able to afford to add those to my collection.
