So a couple of months ago an old Carter M&M album appeared on ebay, with a few stamps, but I was most interested in the album. Unfortunately I was out sniped by the winner. I think it ended up going for about $200. A good description of the album can be found in the american revenuer october 1976 http://tar.revenuer.org/TAR1976.10.pdfI'm investigating reproducing this album, I do not know who (if anyone) holds the copyright. To be usable it pretty much needs the Scott #'s so that's another issue. The Carter album was printed about 1910 and Donald Mull of Boston reprinted it in the 40's. I have the Mull pages and can't find a copyright notice on them. Below is a scan of the first Match page. If anyone has a copy of the Carter album, I would love a scan of the cover and the title page. Does anyone out there have those?

Hi If you're going to reproduce the album for yourself, why wouldn't you just get the Aldrich album? http://www.aldrichstamps.com/index.php?id=6Seems like it would be much less expensive than going through the work of what you've described. I'm pretty sure that licensing the Scott catalog numbers from them won't be inexpensive (which is no doubt why the Aldrich album doesn't include them). However if you're going to produce the album for sale to others, Aldrich's price point also doesn't seem like it would be worth the effort. Unless I'm not understanding something here... Jim |

Well that's interesting. The Wartel pages look to be an exact reprint of the Hull pages. The title page and frame is identical. I recall the Carter album with a fancy cover and title page, fancier bolder, and the pages printed in brown ink. It was a hard bound album, horizontal in orientation. Why would I like to reprint the Carter album? History and character! I really like the partial illustrations. The pages make for an interesting composition, something sorely lacking in the Aldrich pages IMO. I would like my reprint to be faithful to the Carter album if possible, but I may need to identify the spaces by company vs Scott #. That's all doable. I've already created my own fully illustrated pages and offer them in a variety of formats at http://matchandmedicine.com/albums-and-pages/Now I only have to find the time to add some more stamps to the store! I also have produced a first issue specialized revenue album which hopefully I'll be offering for sale this year. |

BTW, my personal M and M collection is on those illustrated pages. I originally made them because I didn't want crowded 8.5 x 11 pages like Aldrich and Springers |

While I understand the appeal of a preprinted album, the acquisition of a nice printed cancel or a facsimile destroys all the symmetry of the printed page. I will continue to do custom pages for my collection. |

So when you get a new item to go on the existing album page (without a space already on the page), do you remount all of the existing stamps onto the newly-made page?
Seems like a lot of work, to me at least. I got tired of that years ago, but I admire those that continue this practice.
I just use Vario stock pages. I haven't used a mount or a hinge in ten years.
I can arrange all of the material in seconds.

Jim - I have text on all my pages, with the potential that they may find their way into an exhibit some day. And, yes, I do a lot of mounting and remounting of my material. Some of my material resides on stock pages with an eye to eventually getting mounted with some explanation. |

I guess my training as a print graphic designer makes me want to put together orderly pages. And I have many times added more to a page and gone back and rearranged and reprinted that page. This has happened quite a bit with my first issue revenue pages. I don't mind. My favorite page is probably my R84 page. I think I've reprinted it three times already. |

Years ago I had a Mull album, but not any more. I have seen several Carter albums, but don't have one. Both are attractive but somewhat crowded. |

I agree that the Mull album is somewhat crowded, same for the Original Carter album but the Carter page size was a bit bigger than the Mull size. I'm now thinking of rearranging and opening up the spacing a bit, and adding company names as identifiers. I'd like to keep the feel of the Carter album and keep it horizontal. More to come. |

It is bigger, but not a lot bigger. Opening it up is a good idea, especially if you have an interest in plate varieties or for those multiples that do exist. I assume that you would keep proofs or essays in a different book if you collected them. And then there is the postal history aspect of m&m's as well. |

Hi Bart. The Carter album is a bit jumbled too because it was developed and laid out using Scotts old numbering system. I like to incorporate plate varieties on separate pages, at least that's how I've been doing with my first issue revenues. Most recently I've been creating some m&m facsimile pages |

Southpaw, I'm kind of curious on what program do you use to design your album pages? I've used AlbumGen. It's a good program, but it doesn't do everything that I am wanting it to do. |
