It's printed on stiff paper (not card) so I don't think it was taken from a souvenir sheet or something similar. Looking at the design closely, it also doesn't look like a photographic reproduction. I don't see any mention of it in The Legendary Persian Rug by Thomas Kingsley. Any ideas? Jim

Thanks Don,
The black and white stamp above is stamp-sized, whereas the link you posted says it's a 18 by 24 inch poster, in color.
So I'm not sure what this thing is.
The proofs were all issued imperforate, too.

Yes, the link is for a poster of the stamp from Newegg. I thought the other info might be a hint at what it is (1872 Essay Proof)... Don |

I copied the poster, and am posting it in case the image or offer disappears there will be a color image of the essay. |

This is just one set of colors for this essay, there are several others. The Eagle Collection at the Postal Museum in DC has about 8 different. The b+w example that started this is some kind of photo or reproduction; as far as I know none were perforated and all were in various colors. |

There was a black and white souvenir sheet of the $5,000 stamp issued at Sipex - you might have a fraudulently perforated copy of that |

Hi SPQR, This is the Sipex sheet. The perforated one doesn't seem even close. Also below is a close up of George's head, if it will help determine if this is an engraved image. Jim |

I, too, used to refer to these as essay proofs. But given that the design was approved means that it is not an essay. It is a proof of the approved design. The fact that none were ever printed and delivered has no bearing, It is an approved design, not an essay (not approved design). |

revenuermd, Is usage of the term "essay" really that limited? Here is Linn's definition: Quote: Essay: The artwork of a proposed design for a stamp. Some essays are rendered photographically. Others are drawn in pencil or ink or are painted. Most essays are rejected. One becomes the essay for the accepted design. This seems to refer to the accepted design as an "essay." Certainly it is common to refer to essays of the accepted design as essays. Are you saying that everyone doing so is wrong? At some point in lexicography common practice comes into play. Basil |

My understanding of the word "essay" was that it is an "unissued design". Approval never entered into it, just whether it was actually issued. |

I think that these should be called proofs and trial color proofs. Since they were approved they are more than essays. Check out the Gross Gallery in the National Postal Museum. I was the Guest Curator of the revenue section under the leadership of Cheryl Ganz and that is how they were described.

I saw the Eagle Collection over the summer, there are about 8 different color combinations amid all the other brilliance in it. |
