Good Evening,

Please let me know if this is a double impression on this stamp. I believe it is, but I don't have a listing for it in the catalogs I have. Have a look at the scans below. This could be common, I'm just not that familiar and would rather post what I found and ask.

The double impression is isolated to the stamps shading. It does not enter the circle frame, the words "Canada Postage", the queens head or the "3 Cents 3" at the bottom of the stamp. Those areas all remain clear of this extra dark shading. Just wondering what you make of it. There is also darker shading underneath "3 Cents 3".

Thanks for looking!

My 2 cents:

I know virtually nil about this series, but the characterestics look to me like an overinked stamp rather than a double impression.

Additionally, a double impression would be across the entire stamp, not just isolated areas. A double TRANSFER, on the other hand could apply to selected points of the stamp, but this doesn't look like a DT to me.

It looks a lot like overinking with some possible oxidation in the same areas.

The stamp appears to be a slip or possibly a kiss print. The plate scratch in the upper margin above DA is interesting. In Reiche and Sendbuehler "CONSTANT PLATE VARIETIES OF THE CANADA SMALL QUEENS" third revised edition, on page 62 image 4-54 shows a similar scratch. If more stamps are reported with this scratch it may be a constant plate variety.

I think there is over-inking at the top, with oxidation.

Here is an example I have, without the oxidation.

There was an article in a recent issue of BNA Topics on similar blurry printings of the 3c Small 6ueenQ, but don't have access to my copies at the moment.

Buy the way, your stamp is Unitrade/Scott #41. With the 1897 date, I would guess is is perf 12.25. Most of my 1897-98 dates have that perforation.

Agree that there is oxidation and some slip printing. Here is similar example I have in my collection that is stronger. Maybe you can see some similarity.

The mark in the top margin mentioned by watermark is definitely interesting though. Below is a similar mark in the lower margin of a 3c SQ. If you look at Bill Burden's website and drill down to the 3c, you may be able to find your mark.
