A new 'Pointing Hand' or 'Return To Writer/Sender' Community Project census database is now published on Stamp Smarter http://www.stampsmarter.com/feature...andHome.htmlIt currently has about 200 'Pointing Hand' auxiliary markings; if you have any covers with these auxiliary markings that you would like to add to the census you can; 1. Become a Project contributor and add them yourself directly to the database Or 2. Send your higher resolution images to me via email Or 3. Post your images in this thread Seeking front and back images of the entire cover, prefer 300 dpi or better but not a hard requirement. Don

Thank you Battlestamps, they have been added. I also added this cover, not a 'Return To Writer' auxiliary marking but I simply could not resist the cool Goodyear glove! Don |

Hi 51Studebaker, would it be possible to see scans of the reverse for your covers?
Especially the last one with a glove?
Thanks in Advance

?? The database contains high resolution images for the Pointing Hand, the cover front, and the cover back. Find the cover you want to see (i.e. Search for 'Goodyear' using Key Word Search and/or use View by Postmark Year and select '1882') and then click on the 'Details' link to see all details including the cover images. (Click on the cover thumbnail to see high resolution image.) Don |

Hi Don,
Great start on an interesting project. Does anyone know the origin of this symbol on mail? Are you interested in early manuscript examples on cover?
Best regards, Russ Ryle

I didn't scan the back when I initially posted this back in 2015. I'm not sure where this cover is now other than in a box somewhere. |

When I was researching "Pointing Fingers" on Australian Mail some 6 years ago, I came across a link to a "Matthew E Liebson" treatment of US "pointing hands" I kept a copy, In it he describes a pointing hand on a US stampless cover, dashed if I could see it though. This link has since disappeared. From my research |

Just curious..why do I get Chinese characters for the "P" in pointing hands? |

Hi Rod, Strange, it appears to have something to do with the ' symbol in front of the 'P or 'R. In the past I have tried to get the forum editor to generate non-English characters without success. I am clueless...perhaps the Ethernet bytes circle around the drain in the opposite direction down under? Don |
