Hi everybody - I picked this up yesterday at a bourse as it struck me as being different from what I have. It's certainly not vermillion. It perfs at 12 x 12.25 and is on smooth wove paper. Is this an early montreal printing? Orange-red?

Thanks!

If it is perf 12 x 12.25, it would be a late Montreal (1886-1889) printing or a late second Ottawa (1896-97) printing. Those are the approximate years that perforation is known. Since it is not vermilion, it would be late Montreal. Late 1888 early 1889 perf 12 x 12.25 has the distinct carmine rose shade, printed in the Montreal Gazette building. I have some orange red examples perf 12 x 12.25 dated 1886 and 1888.

There are multiple references on the Canadian Small Queens and one I like has the following link. You still have to use a Catalogue, mine is the Unitrade Canada Stamp Cat.

I would never venture in giving my opinion on a stamp (SQ) I have not examined (unscanned) and even compared the colours using the Morris Colour Tables and a catalogue + references. The small queens do represent a challenge ! P.S. Beesee might be able to help you in the previous post !

But.....looks like Rose Carmine on the scan....from a 2nd Ottawa printing 1887 to 1897 ??? or from the old Montreal Gazette building ??

Southpaw, if it is carmine rose then it is Scott/Unitrade 41a. These stamps are hard to scan and they appear different on every monitor anyway.
