I've had this stamp for quite some time and I remember being told that the cancel was a famous one and I would love to be educated more about it due to my lack of knowledge.

Your 5-Pointed Star is a New York Foreign Mail Cancel. The cancel is illustrated in the, 'NEW YORK FOREIGN MAIL CANCELLATIONS 1870-1876' by Arthur Van Vlissingen and Morrison Waud © 1968 by The Chicago Collectors Club. The your 5-point star is found on page 20.

What sets this solid 5-point New York Foreign Mail Cancel star apart from others is most U.S. fancy cancels are 4- and 6-points+. Those Fancy Cancels that are 5-point stars have small center designs -- they do not have a solid center. Hope that helps.

Hal

Here are 5-point stars I located on page 105 in, 'CANCELLATION AND KILLERS OF THE BANKNOTE ERA 1870-1894 by James M. Cole ©1995 by the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society, Inc. to compare to the New York Foreign Mail Cancellation.

STAMPSMARTER is a fantastic reference site to locate information on Fancy Cancels and other postal history information. Thanks for reminding me Don! STAMPSMARTER shows 50X more 5-POINT STARS than I have shown from the books. Their material is more up to date than the books I am referencing. DEFINITELY…It pays to use STAMPSMARTER for the newest and most up-to-date information.

Best,
Hal

It is unlikely that the star cancel on a Scott 65 is a NYFM cancel. Weiss's EKU for the 5 pointed star cancel is May 1870 which is at least 3 maybe four years after this stamp was printed. Based on the illustrations in Weiss's book his star appears to be larger than this one. Skinner's book illustrates 8 different five pointed stars and there are many others not illustrated in Skinner-Eno. In reality Star cancels are quite common in the 1860's time period as they were considered patriotic.
