I found this stamp in the album of a very old collection with numerous other Classic US issues. It appears imperf, but it is not Type 1 as it lacks projections on all four sides. All help welcomed.

Trimmed too close at top, but clearly at the bottom a type 2 (plate no. 2), which was issued with perforations either a Scott 30a brown or the subsequent Scott 30 orange brown with the perfs trimmed away.

From the color as it appears in this scan on my computer screen I would say it is a Scott 30a brown.

Thanks for the expertise and assistance. Why would anyone have trimmed this piece, as it had very nice margins, and decent centering before the cropping?

To fool unsuspecting folks into thinking it is a more expensive stamp? Either that or the person was afraid of perforations.
