There is an interesting mark in the UL ornament on this brown LQ.The lines throughout the stamp appear slightly thickened. Do not see it listed anywhere. Anyone else have one like this?

Perhaps you might try to post an image of a "normal" Plate 2 #27 image to elicit an opinion.

Is this a lay out dot? It seems like an unusual position for lay out dot.

Plate 2 stamps show the position dot under the S of SIX. Plate 1 examples show one in the LL corner under the scrollwork. Examples without a position dot are from the leftmost column of the sheet, and experience will help one distinguish between the two plates.

Here is a pair of Plate 1 showing the position dot. Note that it is moved slightly ... a different position on each stamp. (I would assume this would help to accurately plate the variety?)

It also appears there is a larger ink mark in the lower left margin opposite the numeral, (second perf tip up) that is to the right of the stamp to the left, visible on the 7th and 9th perf tip.
Do the position dots also vary under the 6 on Plate 2 plates as this Plate 1 pair shows?

Here is a comparison to consider.

I don't think those marks are significant. They are from the missing stamp to the left, due to the closeness of the perforation.

What I am more interested in is the circled area. Is it common to have a short transfer (missing some features) with Die 1? This appears on both stamps, so it isn't a scuff mark from the cancellation process.

Plate 1 stamps from later printings do show significant wear, the fine detail tends to disappear. Note your stamp is dated late 1870. Plate 1 was extensively re-entered, your pair shows some retouching in inner vignette oval and the top of 6. I cannot plate it.

As for the original post, I cannot see a significant difference between the two prints.
