Trying to finally organize the Washington / Franklins that I own I am trying to add stamp tags to each stamp / pair. I have these 2 both labeled as # 442 but there is a difference in shades. Are these even genuine? More concerned about the line pair. If the pair without the line is genuine it catalogs at a whopping $22.50 so maybe not much of an incentive to fake? They are both flat plate with set-off's on the back.
Expertizing flat plate coils from scans is not recommended, but with that caveat I would say both pairs have a good shot at being genuine as both pairs appear to show pressure ridging in the center perf holes. What I am saying is that some of the holes show that the paper around the hole is slightly pushed up on the top side of the hole giving the appearance of a slight ridge. Check the guide line to be sure that it shows raised ink which is typical of an engraved stamp.
I'd pass on the left hand pair because the top and middle perf rows are not parallel. The pressure ridges in the middle perf row are not on the correct side of the holes, either.
I suspect the other pair is a genuine coil but the line is suspicious. It looks too weak to be an engraved line and the color seems to not match the stamps. It looks more like a weak rotary press joint line than a flat-plate engraved line but these are clearly flat plate stamps, so check as Bill suggests. (On a genuine vertical rotary coil the perforations will always line up vertically, so that rules out a rotary press issue.)
I agree with Tipzi, the line does look suspect. The color looks off and is not a strong engraved line typically found on flat press line pairs. Expertization would be the only way to know for sure.
I also agree with Tipzi. The pair on the left makes me queasy to look at with the perforation rows running in random directions. The perforation holes are very clean suggesting that they were added to an imperf coil pair. The pair on the right with the line added is likely to be a straight edge vertical pair of sheet stamps with the perforations trimmed off on the left. careful measurement with a Peak loupe with a reticule to measure within 0.1 mm or a high resolution scan, 1200 DPI or better measured or overlaid using the Srail method in Photoshop would determine if the edges are parallel or not. Generally hand trimmed edges are not within 0.001 inch (0.025 mm) the tolerance I believe is appropriate for perf 10 auto-wound coils. Perf 8 1/2 and perf 12 auto-wound coils are a bit more complicated because one edge in 10 will be trimmed like a sheet margin. Perf 12 hand assembled coils edges should be within the 0.001 inch tolerance with some caveats but the edges will have small deviations or hesitation marks that should fit together like jigsaw puzzle pieces when the left and right edges are placed next to each other using the Srail method.
