My Scott catalogue says that there are two issues of Belgium Postage Due Lion stamps with white numerals on colored background. Everything that I found online with claims to be the second issue, looks exactly the same as the first. The note in Scott says that the second issue has heavy colored outline of the lions, and thick colored vertical lines at both sides of the design, which matches the third issue with white background and colored numerals.

Does anyone knows about an online resource that can help me distinguish between the two?

Greatly appreciate any help.

The description that comes with the "second issue" tells that the outer line of the lion can be seen better/is thicker(Face and chest area).

I do not believe the picture of the 1895 with the 3 lines under Te Betalen is correct, as far as I know it should be 2 lines.

Kind regards,

Johan.

Thanks Johan.
Noted in my album.

I also do not understand the Scott suggestion, thick lines either side of the frame? they look identical to me.

Looked at a few catalogues(OBP and Michel)

The Scott description is about the vertical lines directly beside the lions, what you would call the inner frame.

In the second and third issue these are slightly thicker, but not much. The thicker line around the lion is a better indicator.

Kind regards

Johan.

There is an old image here on SCF:

From that post:

Quote:
Take a look at two things, in particular...the thick line around the lion (I've highlighted the area behind the lion's head, which is quite obvious, to my eyes), and the thick inside frame line running all the way down the left side of the design.

The same features are found on the right side of the stamp, too.

Here is the thread:

Rod, thank you very much. I think I got it now, thanks to your picture. The problem is that most copies for sale that are offered as the second issue (redrawn), are actually the first issue.

So, here it is.

The first issue,

White horizontal lines at left are "touching" the tail and the chest of the lion. There is no vertical line (or a thin one) of the inner frame on the right. (There is thick vertical color line on the left of inner frame).

Redrawn.

A thick color line separates white horizontal lines from the tail and the chest of the lion on the left. There is a thick vertical line on the right of the inner frame, that matches the one on the left.

Third issue.

Same as the redrawn, but the numerals are in color, and the background is white.

With these new images, this is now probably one of the best references on the web for this issue. (No offense to any others that have popped up in the intervening years since we last discussed this...I haven't looked for other resources in the recent past.)
