Can anyone point me to a good reference for the 2, 3, and 4-bar experimental cancellations used in NYC during the 1850's. I've poked around searching the internet with no luck at all. Maybe I'm not looking in the correct place or I'm just searching using the wrong terms. I'm interested in learning more about the types and the dates they were used. Thanks, Art

Tom Alexander's U. S. Postal markings 1851-1861 which is available as a free download from the US Classics Society (uspcs.org) on page 62 illustrates the variations of those cancels and gives rarity factors. I would also do a search of the Chronicle on the same web site. You may find more information.

If you can find a copy, The Philatelic Foundation Seminar Series #3 has an article about NYC cancellations written by Hubert Skinner. I actually have never read it and should find a copy of the book for myself.

Here are some #10A, #11, and #11A examples showing 1, 3, and 4 bars just for the fun of it. From left to right, they are positions 53R4, unplated, and 90L5e:

Very nice CC.

And for the fun of it, see if middle stamp looks like 32R3.

Subway has that PF Seminar postmark book. Worth reading and keeping as a reference. See if this link works.

Thanks, jaxom100. I wasn't able to match the middle stamp to 32R3.

Seems to be a lot over overlap in terms of usage with these cancels. I haven't read much about them, but what I have seen didn't give any definitive dates of use.

Keep in mind my experience is limited, I just recently began collecting. With that said...

All of the 4 bar New-York cancels I have are on Orange Brown 10 or 10A stamps. If my small sample is indicative, than that narrows the date of use for the 4 bar cancel.

The only 4-bar in my possession is also a 10A; Pos. 47L5E on cover dated 30 Oct '51. What I'm primarily looking for are the dates of use. I'm still checking out all the resources I can find.

Thanks for the tip Tim. Art

After several days of searching, I finally found what I was looking for in The Chronicle. There, Hubert Skinner wrote a series of three articles in 1995-6 entitled "Early Cancellations of New York City," in which he states the usage periods of these circular handstamps containing the bars. It's a good read if you're into that.

Achilles, Thanks for pointing us to the Chronicle articles.

Here's a New York 3-bar CDS tying an Experimental Orange Brown #11A (73R1L) to a cover, dating this usage to December 1851:
