Hi all, I am currently selling an 8d NZ Railways stamp on ebay but was just wondering why it was used in the first place, is there a practical reason for making it or is it for advertisement of the railway? Kind Regards, Tom.

Hi Tom. I am not sure what you mean by the question, but if you are asking what railway stamps are for I can tell you about that.
Back when I was a child, just after WWII my dad sometimes asked me to mail a letter or a package that was in a big hurry. I would take it to the railway station in my town and hand it to the station chief. He would then put a railway stamp on it and put it on the next train out. Usually at the station of destination someone would be waiting or the item.
Does this explain it a bit?. If you use the search function on this page you can find a lot more about this,

Peter
