Below is the reverse of a cigarette acknowledgement card from a field hospital / caulaty station ? with a partial postmark for FPO 313 dated February 1944 on the front. At this time in the Ortona area of italy. I was wondering if anyone could decipher the senders address at the top of the card.

Also any idea about the last word on line 5 of the message I can read all the rest. aux. ??????

9.CDN:FD:AMB.-CA(O)

Guess:

9th Canadian Forward Ambulance CMF Canadian Military Forces.

Perhaps 9th Canadian Field Ambulance?

CA(O) perhaps Captain Ordnance (Military fellows should be able to translate)

Interesting item. I have a similar one, also mailed in 1944 from FPO 610.

I like the Buckingham Cigarettes corner card.

Rod's got most of the unit. CA(O) was the abbreviation for Canadian Army (Overseas).

These cards are not that uncommon There aremany different designs. I liked the one I posted as it had a lot more info in it - made it more human. Most are just simple thak you messages.

This page gives a reference
http://www.lac-bac.gc.ca/databases/...shjov1ptkbl6
but I have not seen this anywhere and I do not know the periodical refered to.

There is a reasonable article here

That link you posted was very interesting. Searching for the document led me to find it outside of that subscription service you linked to. I have not seen these before. A bit more wandering round the "interweb" I found this
http://www.cmp-cpm.forces.gc.ca/dhh...ndex-eng.asp
which sould be a good source for more info.

I think FOrward is correct for the FO

AQ,

I read that as "FD" not "FO" hence Field.

A guess only, I'll stand corrected.

Indeed, reading it further took one to the times of battle (for me)
Put extra relevance to that postcard.

I have some of these in my Canadian military postal history collection. These particular cards are a great source for military cancels and regimental markings.
