I inherited this stamp along with a small collection. It is listed as a 318, but I have my doubts. Looks like it was trimmed up top and had a guideline on bottom, which I have not seen on any other 318s. What do you guys think.
"Fake" is too strong a term for this. It is a genuine 300 with the perforations crudely trimmed at top to resemble a 318. Badly damaged, value is essentially zero.
As an aside, the early coil stamps were hand-made from sheet stock, thus the guide line at the bottom is perfectly ok on a coil in this era and not a condemning feature. Not all lines are equal in cause or purpose. It is completely different than the joint-lines seen on rotary coils.
