I inherited this stamp along with a small collection. It is listed as a 318, but I have my doubts. Looks like it was trimmed up top and had a guideline on bottom, which I have not seen on any other 318s. What do you guys think.

It is a trimmed stamp. The top and bottom straight edges should be parallel.Your stamp clearly does not have parallel straight edges.

step two would be to measure the height of the stamp. Again, your stamp would not pass.

here is a photo of #318

Thanks for the replies.

Does it have any value other than face value then?

"Fake" is too strong a term for this.
It is a genuine 300 with the perforations crudely trimmed at top to resemble a 318.
Badly damaged, value is essentially zero.

As an aside, the early coil stamps were hand-made from sheet stock, thus the guide line at the bottom is perfectly ok on a coil in this era and not a condemning feature. Not all lines are equal in cause or purpose. It is completely different than the joint-lines seen on rotary coils.
