See numerous discussions of Anthony's on this site and every other collecting site. I agree with chasa, essentially zero chance.

I am interested in peoples explanations of why they believe that this stamp is real or not.

The best answers come from:
"The Expert's Book by Paul W. Schmid a guide to the U. S. Washington/Franklin Issues

but this book is getting hard to find.

This stamp is one of the more commonly faked coils.

This stamp does not look tall enough. The bottom edge looks uneven.

And the dealer sells fake stamps all the time.

alub,
Paul had me digitize the "The Expert's Book" and he has this available on CD disk. If anyone needs contact info for Paul let me know and I can get you in touch with him.

Is it a 388? Not without a cert it isn't...

Why?

1. Seller. Enough said. Don't need any more reasons...

2. Bottom uneven - doesn't match top

3. Perfs on left & right don't match? (at all??) Top right looks like it was done with a glue gun??

The stamp is a trimmed Scott 375 sheet stamp. The top and bottom margins uneven and much too narrow. The perforations look genuine. Most used 388 fakes are trimmed sheet stamps while most unused examples are 384H imperf coils with fake perforations added. Genuine 388 examples, the few that exist, are a duller shade than fakes contrived from later printings.

With Anthony's, you never know... if he ran out of 375's he's not above using a 332... most of his buyer's wouldn't even think to check for a watermark, anyway...
