Hello,
Although this stamp has faults including in used condition with slight cancellation, and without gum. It is perforated12, without grill too. It was printed by the American Bank note company. Wove paper.
I believe it is not the red brown color. but possible another variety color. Could someone please inform me is this color common for this particular stamp? I don't see what is the Scott# for this particular stamp. Any information would be welcomed. Thank you.

A stamp dealer informed me that this is a possible rare stamp. However, I would need to check for soft porous paper vs wove. I was skeptical. It is thin, and surely don't want to shake it to my ear due to fragile.Told by this gentleman if place to light up to light is manner to view it. Apparently with cancellations sometimes can tell too, but this does not have clear year on it.

He had been collecting over 30 years,so I expressed would need to review it more carefully, before deciding to depart with it.

I wouldn't put too much faith in that dealer. The chances of that stamp being rare are slim to none.

I have to give him benefit of the doubt. I have bought stamps from him with limited cost before since he sells at shows and has tremendous amount of stamps, and found out that they were valuable. I know that the percentage are very slim.

Being a stamp dealer does not automatically make someone a stamp expert. Being passionate about the hobby doesn't turn common stamps into rarities. The 1875 re-issue (Scott 180 if that's what he/you believe) according to the Seigel census has 24 total being certified, none used.

Lioness, there is one way to settle this. Have your stamp certified. It's that simple!

Forgot to mention that the 178 is wove paper and the 183 is soft porous paper, or vice versa.

What????.24 only exist, none in used?? I have to read what Seigel's wrote about this stamp. The possibility is too strange to be true, but seriously, it would be interesting to know the outcome with a certification as Peter suggested. I am sure experts would be able to determined what kind of paper it was printed on immediately. Thank you for showing me the chart via link, Stallzer.

Neither 178 or 183 are that rare. What are you looking at? If it's wove paper it's 178. Used cat $15.

The Scott 180 is what I am commenting about since I viewed what Stallzer placed in link. Need to check specifically if this stamp is wove or porous. According to Seigel's. I just read in their search engine about a mint conditions that they sold in past.

183 is not on wove or rare. cat for used is $5.

There is a rare scarlet 2c worth $115,000 and only a handful are known. Maybe that's what you were looking at. They were printed without gum and never used on mail. If you find one of those, please send it to me. :)
