This stamp belongs to a friend of my son, so I have not actually seen the stamp in person. It appears to be green rather than blue. I do not where to go to pursue an explanation. I have been told the color in the photo is true.

If the paper toned, it would turn yellow. Yellow + blue = green.

Thanks, Don. Now can you help me determine if it is 179 or 185?

I am thinking it is 179 because 179 is identified in the ancient book I have as "1875 Continental Printing - Yellowish Hard Paper"

I lean toward a 179 too but would verify by looking closer at the perf tips.

I agree, 179 is most likely. The perfs are sharp and clean without a lot of fibers at the tips. That is usual with hard paper; soft paper usually has a lot of fibers.
