R100a is one of those stamps that for whatever reason, I never got around to getting a nice example of. The one I have with handstamped cancel has a a pretty bad horizontal crease running through it.

So last week one showed up on ebay that not only is attractive, but is still on document, an 1865 mortgage. The high-denomination imperfs are not common on document (unless your name is Mike Mahler and you own an insane fleet of them ). So we negotiated back and forth a bit and I wound up with it at a price I'm content with.

Small horizontal margin crease at lower right well outside the design area, so I don't hold it against the stamp. Nice vibrant color, good margins. It's too bad about the margin chunk missing from the right side of the document, but it is what it is.

The problem with these large stamps is that when found on document, they frequently have document folds running right through the stamp. This one does not.

I like the adhesive seal at the bottom of the document as well.

I have another R100a on document floating around somewhere, but it's on a huge vellum indenture and has multiple slits/cuts through the stamp, which was not unusual as adhesive didn't always hold well to the sheepskins and cuts through the stamp and underlying document helped keep the stamp affixed. Also, it is a combination usage with other perforated stamps, whereas this is a solo usage.

Very nice example of a tough stamp to find still on original document.

Nice score!

What's the document in the background? Behind the missing chunk. Just curious.

The chunk that missing, could that have been another stamp or seal?

It's the other half of the mortgage document, folded over for scanning. The chunk isn't big enough IMO for another signature.
