I finally got a cancellation on it, though I had to travel far to do it. I sent it to a friend who got the cancellation for me.

I'm going to order another one but this time I won't have it cancelled. I sure do like that cancellation. I was told that it couldn't be cancelled. |

I was tempted to try it at my P.O., Robert, but didn't think it would happen because the stamp wasn't issued. I contacted a fiend of mine and he did it for me. After all, Robert, as you know, Canada Post will not cancel unissued stamps. I guess my friend forgot to mention that. |

These labels are not official stamps. I trust this was canceled by a by a clerk who didn't know it wasn't a stamp. I assume this never actually got mailed as that would be considered fraud by the post office. |

Think about it .... From the "running a huge business" perspective, it is not training-time efficient that every clerk and carrier be fully familiar with every stamp that Canada and Newfoundland have ever issued. Odd things will slip through the system and be accepted as postage. It is even easier to slip something past the canceling machines. Every postal service around the world plays the odds that the vast majority of its customers are honest and that the mail is properly paid. The cost of catching/stopping the last percent or two of fraud far exceeds the loss from that fraud. The exceptions get the media attention far beyond the proportion of their occurrence. |

The "Wayzata" was never issued, and while used copies exist, they were either illegitimate favour cancels or accepted by a postal clerk who assumed they were valid stamps. The stamps were printed in Minneapolis, sold in Minnesota, and most of the issue destroyed in Minneapolis. The Newfoundland Post Office never received any of the printing. |

By Peter Mosiondz, Jr. Quote: Newfoundland specialists insist that the stamp is real for they document several covers posted from three Newfoundland post offices and then delivered to the addresses without any assessment of postage due. The three covers are postmarked in the latter part of 1932. |

There are some post offices that allow you to hand cancel your own stamps with their hand canceler. |

While I respect Peter Mosiondz I don't know the Newfoundland specialists that he is referencing. Yes, 1932 covers do exist, all philatelic creations of Lawrence Clark in his attempts to get a catalog listing for the issue. I can also show you a number of covers franked with Christmas Seals that were processed and delivered. But, it doesn't make them legitimate stamps.
The cover you illustrated it was mailed in New York to St. John's with the USA 7c Airplane stamp paying the postage. The existence of the Wayzata on the cover is without meaning. |
