According to the Siegel census, it appears that mint copies of Canada Scott # 1 with 17 stamps and # 2 with 12 stamps are much scarcer than mint copies of Canada Scott # 3 with 34 stamps. See https://siegelauctions.com/census.p...lth_-_Canada

Does this mean that there are less mint known stamps of Canada Scott # 1 and # 2 even when added together than for Canada Scott # 3? It appears that much of the popularity of Scott # 3 has to do with most getting destroyed and few getting issued. However, in terms of survival and existence, it appears that there are less mint copies of Canada Scott # 1 and # 2 than of # 3 known. With regards to used copies there are probably many more Scott # 1 and Scott # 2 than # 3 which can confuse things.

I have no reason to doubt this census since they are very professional philatelists and can reference many different auction sources and have a very good census going on many different stamps from different countries.

If this is the case, then I do not think that catalogue values are reflective of this fact and most collectors are also unaware of this fact.

jogil..I would take those figures with a grain of salt.
For instance, I was driving with a big time stamp collector one day and I mentioned about only 20 large date 10cents piece in existence...He looked at me and said I have a friend that has 8 hidden.

What I am trying to get at is there are probably lots more so called scarce stamps hidden in people safes..just my opinion jogil.

Oh agreed jogil, but if the stamp world is like the coin world, then just maybe..or maybe not.

When you have a face-different stamp that had limited use, you can get such an anomaly.

A similarity exists with US Scott #39, the 90c blue, and Scott #30, the 5c orange-brown. They came out right before the civil war and most remainders were destroyed. They got very little use, and, thus are almost always found unused. The total quantity of 90c stamps (used+unused) is certainly more than a Canada #3, but the 90c stamp is face-different and its not super common so it doesn't sell cheaply even unused. The 5c orange brown was a similar story to #39, but sells for less.

Compare with Scott #30A, the 5c brown, which is really common used, but is a legitimately rare item unused. The total quantity of these used+unused is way more than a #30 or a #39, so they are fairly cheap used. Unused, however, they are a recognized scarce to rare stamp. There may well be fewer #30A's unused than #39's, although I'm not sure of the exact population.

Canada Scott # 2 mint may be rarer than even Scott # 3 mint. Here are charts showing their auctions. The same stamp which if repeated should have the same description. Compare http://www.canadianstampauctions.co...s/2_mint.htm with http://www.canadianstampauctions.co...s/3_mint.htm
