Hello!
I´m trying to boost my 1840-1940 collection by acquiring lots on ebay, and a very interesting source is buying the big blues that from time to a time appear on ebay.
Some time ago (maybe one year) I found in this forum a "market study" with the values of recent auctions on ebay of big blues depending on the number of stamps containing.
I can´t find that thread anymore.
Maybe anyone can help me?

Thanks

You might be thinking of this;

Just a word of caution almost all fixed price collections on ebay are overpriced and some are ridiculously over priced,

Auctions starting at a low opening bid are better but are very competitive.

I don't know what stamp auctions are available in Spain, but, depending on your budget, you may find better value in their "various" sections than on ebay. You can also find pre-1940 coverage (generally better than Big Blue) in world albums such as Schaubek and SG's New Ideal.

Krelyea, thanks, that's what I was looking for, thnks.

geoffha thanks, yes, it is true that there are several schaubek albums in german stores with a lower shipping cost for Europe, and maybe a better coverage, I will check for the stanley gibbons.

Do you think there is a surplus price for buying albums instead of separate stamps?

In general, no, although two things run counter to that: people may want the album or leaves (eg some US collectors may want to put more Scott pages into their existing albums); and people will always hope that there's something exciting lurking in the album. In general, you have a somewhat higher chance of an album not having been picked through and the better material taken out if you buy at auction, rather than ebay.p

A lot of the large sellers on ebay buy the albums and such that they offer from the auction houses, pick through or outrageously boost the price and offer on ebay. You are much better off buying from the auction houses yourself.

GeoffHa: I ve been looking for auction sites apart than ebay, and I can only find auctions with starting price at 50-60% catalogue value.
The only reason for buying at ebay is I cant find nothing better in my local stores, some of them, ridiculously overpriced.
Maybe i'm looking in the wrong places?
Is there any website that compiles stamps auction stores?

Take a look at the "Various" section here - ignoring the £2,000 lots! You don't usually see indications of percentage of CV on a biggish mixed lot, but it should be under 10%. As a rough guide, UK auction sites tend to estimate at around 10% of Gibbons CV for standard material where the CV can readily be calculated. Bear in mind the buyer's premium, which can add 20% to the price, and postage costs - hence my hope that you could find auction houses in Spain.

A few months ago I picked up - at a local auction - a great deal of nice pre-1940 material in some Scott albums going up to ~1980. Because they had much newer material as well, the older stamps got overlooked I believe. May be worth your time looking for that kind of situation in an auction/eBay.

@Igrodi... Here's some tips from fellow European...

1) Forget buying outside EU-zone
It's simply too expensive because of postage costs and custom fees. Take into account that some European countries have low postage costs (Germany, Netherlands are exceptionally cheap - you can ton of stuff for 10£á of postage) and others have very expensive postage fees (for example a heavy parcel from Finland to Spain will easily cost 50-60£á). Most are somewhere in between.

2) When/if buying from Europe, simply forget Scott albums. They simply don't move much that often in Europe...
But there are plenty of alternatives if you know what to look around. German auctions have got plenty of Schaubek albums, The French auctions provide you with Yvert's the British auctions give you access to SG albums - all have got worldwide editions. And then there are dozens of lesser known "national" alternatives.

3) As for cost of buying full album vs smaller lots... It depends entirely upon the album and the condition and the contents. A quality clean Schaubek album or SG Imperial usually adds significantly to total cost as some people really just want the album (to carry on collecting etc). But if the spining has gone bad, pages are musty etc. then the album adds no extra cost (other than postage/weight).

4) As for where to buy... Seek stamp auction houses instead of ebay etc. ebay is usually "bottom of food chain" (though it provides some good buys from time to time). If you want to buy a lot & cheap, then you must target auction houses where a lot of eBayers buy their sales stock - Postiljonen, Sandafayre etc. major stamp auctions. The bigger lots you buy, the more affordable they become (if measuring price per kg).
