Fairly Common Ridges On Back Of Classics, What Are They From?

Hello,

After spending lots of time checking backs of classic era stamps for grills, I have noticed a set of curved ridges that I think must be artifacts from the production process. Reminiscent of a fingerprint. What are they? Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Image highlighting my question below:

They are the impression from the engraved image on the front.

Technically it is from the paper being forced into the recesses on the plate when the stamp is printed.
