Hi everyone,

I'm looking to mount some of my Jubilees and was wondering about recommended brand, size, and opening type. I think I'd just like black ones. Also, do mounts come with an adhesive backing?

I was looking at Unitrade mounts as the price seemed reasonable, but would like to hear what people think.

Thanks!

Hi Jim. First of all, let me publicaly thank you for that free wonderful little collection of 1c admirals you gave away in the draw of names in September. Appreciated!

As to your question, I have an extra german manufacturers mount gauge, Leuchterum/Lighthouse I believe, and I can mail to you. Just email me your address.

Personally, if you are using preprinted pages it is recommended to go with clear mounts so the image or number is still viewable when the stamps are removed. If you want to highlight the stamps on blank pages or mount on pages for shows I would recommend the black mounts. These tend to highlight the border and perforations more and lighter colored stamps.

As to back split or open top, I recommend the split back. With open tops, if for any reason your album or pages get bumped or turned upside down the stamps will shift, usually falling out of the mount. The same thing as what happens with stockbooks. Strips are great as you can cut them with a mount cutter to the size desired and are more economical than precut mounts. Price is always a big determining factor but preference still ultimately falls with the user.

Pretty well all mounts being quite similar, with most produced in Germany, today come with a moisture activated adhesive affixed to the mount. Use a very small amount of moistue across the middle of the top of the mount only to allow it to remain flexable enough to mount your stamps. As well this will prevent unnecessary wrinkling of the album page when the gum dries and shrinks.

Sorry I don't have it in front of me where I am now to check on the size for Jubs.

Mike

Just my opinion but I will never trust mounts. I have seen nothing but trouble with them. Here a some of the things that I have found with them:
1) The plastic sticks to the paper.
2) If mint, the gum gets all shiny
3) I threw out 7 newfie stamps on Saturday because of toning caused by the Unitrade mounts.
4) Humidity will destroy the stamps in a mount.
I understand that cost is a factor in presenting your treasures but I think spending a few extra $ on proper hingeless pages is well worth the cost.

Hi Stuart,

You mention hingeless pages - aren't these just pages with mounts on them? I'm looking to design my own pages so I can display more than just one of each stamp in the series, such as nice postmarks etc. Any further insight you can share?

I definitely have a couple stamps I don't want to risk being affected by humidity and toning...

I use Lindner pages and albums for my collection. My stamps are all MNH and the pages are non acidic and the plastic sleeves are some type of chemical neutral material. Brand new they are very expensive but I bought mine used at auction for a very reasonable price. My collection has been in them for 5+ years and I check them annually. I live in Toronto with high humidity in the summer and they are as post office fresh as the day I put them in there. I have a lot of expensive stamps and I have no worries about them. An old time collector friend of mine warned me about the dangers of mounts and he was right. I had a couple of hundred $ worth of damage to my stamps and had to replace them.

I've used Hawid brand only - black, top opening - mounts for at least 30 years without any problems other than stamps shifting as I've cut the mounts a little too large. I did live in Toronto most of my life, then Windsor, Oshawa and now north of Toronto and have never had a problem with moisture. I buy from Unitrade. I didn't try back opening mounts as I thought I might accidentally wet the gum side of the stamp and I also collect only MNH.

BlackJag no offense intended to those who use mounts properly and of sufficient quality. I was warning jjmcell about the unitrade mounts. I don't like them. Hawid is a brand a few of my friends use and are very happy with. Using mounts is not as easy as it sounds and when you're putting your $1 Jube in it, mint or used it is prudent to use caution. I have seen a stamps perf caught in the side of mount and ripped in two being put in the mount. The Lindner album I use and a few other on the market use long plastic pouches on the pages, very easy to insert stamps, they are clear so you can see the backs so you don't have to handle them. From my experience, I believe it is simply your best option.

While stamp storage methods to be used are very much up to the individual collector, my feeling is that pre-printed albums suffer the disadvantage of inflexibility. I use Hawid mounts for all mint stamps, mounted or unmounted, mounted to prevent further build-ip of hinge remnants, and besides, it is the FRONT of the stamp that I show people in displays! Trying to get an unmounted mint GB Penny Black is exceedingly costly.
As to flexibility, I specialise in my three main collections - Italy and area, Austria and Hungary - and have a significant number of varieties that pre-printed albums do not cover.
