The Polish Snow Queen looks pretty grim, and her raven as well. The stamp was issued in 1987 for the HAFNIA philatelic exhibition in Copenhagen and honors H. C. Andersen for his many fairy tales. (Hi Alexey, Lovely collection of Russian witches! K.) |

Snow White has only taken one bite of the poisoned apple and is already falling into a deep stupor. The queen-turned-witch seems almost surprised at the power of her poison. 1962 |

I wonder if the children in Manama (Bahrain) have ever seen real snow in their country. A story about the Snow Queen might be particularly mysterious to them. stamp of 1972 honoring H. C. Andersen. I think the Devil/Troll is actually the villain in this story for having made the evil mirror, the Snow Queen just uses it. |

The Hungarian Witch of 1959 is perhaps one of the oldest examples of a witch pictured on a stamp. She and her black cat are simply, but very clearly drawn. Here Gretel is the older of the two children. |

Sea witches have been featured in European folklore for centuries. Also referred to as 'Sea Hags', they are malevolent magical beings known for tempting mermaids to give up their immortality for the love of a human. Here she has given the mermaid a vile of poison for that purpose; 2005. |

The Soldier meets the Witch at the hollow tree into which he had to climb in order to get the tinder box. He kills the poor Witch and takes over the powers of the Tinder Box; Manama 1972 (Dependency of Ajman), part of a set of 6 stamps on Andersen's fairy tales. Thanks IckyPikey for reminding me that Manama/Ajman is part of the Emirates and not to be confused with the Manama of Bahrain. I found an interesting link to the dune stamps: [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunes_(Stamps)[url] I sometimes find such dunes among the endless stamps I am given by many of my collecting friends when I ask if anyone has a donation for my group of children. Some of the dunes are OK, others are of very poor quality. |

The critical question which has yet to be asked in this thread is whether any of these witches weigh as much as a duck. |

New Zealand honored 5 authors and illustrators of children's books in 2013. Margaret Mahy (1936-2012) drew a little old Witch who has just learned how to write the word Witch! She looks quite proud of herself. |

Another example of the Witch telling the soldier about the Tinder Box in the tree, by H. C. Andersen, illustrated on a stamp of Bulgaria, 1968. |
