Just wanting some info......the revenue "Charter Party" stamp......are they strictly for wills? Where can I find descriptions of which revenues are to be used for which documents...? Maybe a lawyers handbook exists....??

Mike Mahler's excellent book "Catalog of United States Revenue Stamp Documents" goes over all of the document types in depth.

Keep in mind that the requirement to match the stamp type to the transaction type was repealed in December 1862, only 2 months after the taxes were implemented, after businesses complained. Many companies continued to use matching stamps through early 1863. Documents from this period where the stamp types match the documents in question are called "early matching usages" or EMUs, and are highly collectible.

I guess that begs the question why so many different types allowed to proliferate after the repeal......

The above were on a 1899 document, along with two others (different stamps) on a different page.

The Spanish American War taxes, which came into effect July 1, 1898 are completely different rate structures and stamp types than the Civil War era revenue usages.

Once you eventually get all of the battleship stamps, you might want to get into the battleship-like stamps, like these.

Battle-ish revenue stamps?

And there's also the proprietary medicine overprints...

Never heard of Business School stamps !! Wow, is that still a viable tax?? Well, I am a war history buff, and I really liked the Spanish American War and Boxer Rebellion subject matter. Having a Great White Fleet battleship as a stamp subject seems really cool ! I also just liked the design.

Rick,
If you really want to dig around in the Spanish American War revenue period there was a great blog going for a while,

http://1898revenues.blogspot.com/

It's still there, but hasn't been updated for several years.
