I happen to have many stamps like these with two year dates, commemorating some length of years.

This stamp covers 20 years 1914 to 1934.
Does it follow then that this stamp was issued 1934?
Forgive the question please. Just asking to be sure

Nic, it's actually a very very good question.

In general, it is true. When a year range is given on a stamp, the last year is often the same as the year the stamp was issued. And in the example you provided, the stamp was in fact issued on August 15, 1934 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Czechoslovakian Legion which fought in World War I.

There are a few exceptions, of course. I have seen a least one example of these types of stamps issued one year before or one year after. A bit more common are some cases in which the stamp was issued on a 5/10... year anniversary of the last date on the stamp.

I wish every country was as anal as the Germans. They print the year of issue on virtually all of their stamps. It makes it much easier to sort and mount/store. It may be hard to see, but it's in the lower left of this lighthouse issue.

We Americans like to make life interesting. We have issued a few stamps in which the date in the corner is not the same as the year issued. The usual story is that the stamps was printed/ordered earlier and not officially issued until later.

That is correct. The set was issued on Sep 1, 1953 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first stamp issued for use in South Africa (before the Union of South Africa was formed). Those early stamps are known as the Cape of Good Hope Triangles and are highly sought after. However, forgeries of some of the "Triangles" abound and even the genuine ones offered on the internet are frequently mis-IDed because it can be difficult to distinguish between the different printings.

Thats a nice stamp nic! I like the little lion fellow down in the corner. Lots of detail in the older stamps.

Nice lighthouse stamp laswabbie. It looks like a castle!
