Greetings all: until around 1997 my collecting was strictly classic us except for a vf used Canada 2 that I bought from rupp bros and had already had a PFC. But then I discovered the Rhodesia doublehead,KGB,very early Trinidad imperfs etc and so actually have a fairly interesting collection of the world pre 1920 most unused. Now I am wondering if it makes sense to certify these items. What would you certify and who in the us is generally accepted as an authority for foreign issue? I have rarely seen these classic foreign issues even the expensive ones be certified by collectors with anywhere the frequency of their us counterparts.
I hadn't ever planned to collect foreign. However,it got to a point where I wanted to continue to collect but as I in general collect unsed the price of the classic us items I sought were getting to be quite an obstacle. Thus the glance at foreign classics-that plus the fact that had an international jr album of the world that my grandfather had started. He was a travel agent and collected stamps of places he frequently visited such as Latin and central American countries. He did not buy expensive items but there was enough of the early engraved stiff to get me to look at the world in a differnt way. That was the key for me: line engraved stamps reminscent of the us transmississippis. Looking over the world it is clear that a great part of the world produced beautiful stps between 1875 and 1930 with the most beautiful colors. Naturally many of the issues were printed either in London or by the abnc in the us but even the poorest countries on earth such as Haiti,Ethiopia, many of the African colonies. Naturally early British coonwealth such as bca, bea,Rhodesia,no Rhodesia,Niger coast protectorate, south rhodesia, victoria, etc speak for themselves--they are gorgeous. Bu early Trinidad imperfs are challenging gor their shades sort of in the same way us Scott 70-70d and Scott 78-78c are.
