This item appears to be from the 1901 series intended for use on foreign mail. It is printed on a very flimsy, almost transparent paper, with some minor smudging of the ink around the edges of the design. This paper also appears to be yellowing somewhat with age. The item is then glued to a sturdy card stock with a bar of adhesive of some sort with you can see as a faint shadow above the stamp. There is also a rectangular discolouration directly above the stamp, probably due to contact with another stamp or similar sheet. Do anyone know whether this was some sort of readily available proof or is it just a Cinderella production by someone not connected with the Turkish Postal Authorities.

Hi backroads,

I believe this has been cut out of a 1901 wrapper, H&G E4.

That sounds reasonable particularly as the rectangle of paper is not completely regular and square. I just had a hard time with the extremely flimsy paper. I have removed it from its backing and attach a picture with a Canadian commemorative behind to show the see through nature of the paper. I also show the reverse which does appear to be completely gummed.

Higgins & Gage describe the paper as "oiled" although it look to me more like greaseproof paper.

It's a wrapper - Isfila AN64 - described as a 'newspaper wrap' & 96x372mm in its entirety. 1901. Value mint $16 & used $150. (Values are for entires...)

Isfila also says 'thin oily paper'.

I've always thought it was closer to onion skin...
