Hi all,
I have a question how letters from Canada mailed in 1941 could go uncensored to Europe after they left Canada. I have seen several examples of this, in particular mailed from Halifax to Norway in August to November 1941. One would think these would go via the US (thus should have had US censor) via the transatlantic route to Lisbon and then onto German censor in Berlin/(Frankfurt). But there are absolutely no markings on any of the ~10 letters I have seen. Here is one example:

I do have a theory, though. Could it be that these letters were sent as "Bomber Mail" to the UK? There was a tremendous ferry-activity of planes across the Atlantic taking place - or RAF Ferry Command - with some 10000 planes in total flown across to Europe. This Ferry Command was formed 21st July 1941.
Further, could it be possible once arrived in the UK that the covers were opened up and the content placed in some neutral envelope before being sent on to the recipients - thereby not disclosing that the original letter actually originated from Canada?

I'm just "arm-waiving" here but still, I find it peculiar for these covers to have reached Norway without any US/UK/German censorship markings...

Any thoughts on this?

I'm not sure I understand, K928. The censor tape on the end of the envelope clearly indicates this was censored. I'm not sure which from which country this tape originated, there are experts on the forum who can identify that. I would suggest it is either Canadian or British. But coming from Halifax, there would be no reason for these to go through the US that I would see.
I'm happy to be enlightened.

My understanding is that US military censorship was still in the planning stage in November 1941.

James, the censor strip is from (civilian) censorship in Canada; possibly at the post office in Halifax. C.36 is one seen frequently.
The main reason and requirement going through the US was that no formal routes existed between Canada and Europe at the time. Except like I mentioned, the RAF Ferry Command.

So far I have never seen a cover censored in both Canada and the US, but I guess they may exist. I suspect that if a US censor saw a Canadian censor label it was just passed through.

Re your first cover once it had been censored in Canada there would have been no reason for it to be censored again. If every letter was censored at every stage of the journey the work load would have been impossible to manage.

Much of the mail from Canada was not censored in Canada but at the destination especially mail to the UK but also to other B.E. countries.

Mail censored twice can be found but it is not that common unless it went to German occupied territories.

Some mail to the UK from Canada was not censored at all, these are not so hard to find.

Any particular reason why the Americans should have censored a letter in August-November 1941 in any case?

Getting back to the original cover in question...It is a "V" slogan during WW2...It is NOT a censorship cancel as shown by your cover below.

This is a censorship cancel below.

Here is a link to Canadian WW2 censorship cancels.

The C36 is the lower part of a Canadian resealing label. These wee used after the letter had been opende for censorship. The top of the label will be on the back of the letter and reads EXAMINED BY. C36 was the number assigned to the censor who processed this letter.

Wert, You may be confusing two separate things.
1. The blackout cancels conceal the overall location of the sender. Not used everywhere, nor on all mail
2. The censor tape reseals the envelope after examination of the specific contents.
