Unsold lots? That's funny, in the auction listing on SAN every lot is listed as "sold". So how can there be any unsold lots? |

Not every auction in SAN is configured the same. They don't all differentiate between sold and passed lots. Aldrich never does.
That's what makes the entire notion of "market data" on SAN completely useless, as it includes bogus result data from firms like Aldrich and Apfelbaum, and some of the smaller auction houses that don't ever show passed lots. |

Quote: That's what makes the entire notion of "market data" on SAN completely useless I'm glad you pointed that out. That's a pretty useful observation. Regarding this sale, my guess is the house probably brought in some of their clientele, that they have cultivated over the years. I have never bid with Aldrich, and I only know what I observe from a distance. On their website, however, is this, about Aldrich himself: Quote: He has spent many years specializing in United States Revenues and has become a leader in that field, both as a seller and a buyer. Which, to me, implies that he has the client-base, somewhere. Maybe. |

He has been in the revenue field for about 40 years; he is the #3 dealer in this area. He does hold the largest revenue auctions. Clearly he does have a client base. Like any dealer client base, some are very knowledgeable and some less so. But he does have a far higher percentage of landmines in his auctions. |

You have to understand how it works. Go to an Aldrich lot from the auction. Let us use Lot 17. Click on market data and then click on unsold. Apfelbaum's lots will come up. Click on sold and they will not. |

Quote: he does have a far higher percentage of landmines in his auctions I totally agree, I've made that same observation on my own over time, in areas I know well. |

This is a recent development then. Apfelbaum results never used to indicate which lots sold. What's weird is that for some auction houses you get the link to market data for each lot, but on other auction houses you don't, even for the same stamps. And forget trying to find help/reference material on SAN; it's a complete disorganized mess. |

I have been seeing them and discussing them with other collectors since the late 70's when he started his auctions. |

If one sticks to the popular items in the major auction houses then the market data is fairly reliable. |

Wow - if I counted correctly 21 of the 25 were trimmed, fake overprints, fake roulette, etc., and another was a decline opinion. I didn't go back to the catalog to see if the 3 that actually got certs as genuine had unidentified faults. |

Unfortunately the catalog is no longer online, and I do not have a hard copy. |
