This was in a recently acquired packet of Australia. The one on the right looks like the black ink was left out or possibly running out when printing. I did not see anything Scott listed for this variety but I am working from old catalogs. Black missing or something else.
Thanks for looking and commenting.
Paul

No, no mention in Scott.
It might simply be a change due to exposure to sunlight. It doesn't look like a lack of black to me, or the nose and eyes would be less visible.

Thanks for your response. I thought of fading but ruled it out as only the black is lighter or missing. It is hard to see in the posted pictures but the eye especially is no longer black but dark brown in the second picture. The other shades are equal between the comparisons. Also a bit of an update to this query. This is in a glassine that has approximately 100 of the same stamp. I found two more exactly the same.
At the very least it is a minor variety?

Wheelman, you should ask staff to move your post to the Australian forum - better odds of getting an answer. To me it looks like under-inking, if there is such a thing.

Opinion:
Common, this issue has appeared to me often "faded" or similar, in the many thousands that have passed my desk.
No varieties listed excepting the 24c issue.

Hi Paul

It is most likely a result of refill ink for the printing presses, it is common for the ink to be a little lighter or darker, it isn't a variety.
