I HAVE THIS CERT but I don't think it will solve anything except maybe people should realize the next time you need a cert maybe ask more questions or the right questions . Like would you still give a cert if you are not 100% sure what the stamp is.But isn't that why you send it to a professional are they obligated to tell you ?Would anyone really know or trust if it wasn't real or what you think it should be or shouldn't be. This was the first time I have done anything like this so I wouldn't know ,I think sometimes you have to take a chance to learn and it can be costly. But we all learn! In this case maybe zero stamps like this to compare to is a big learning curve. So maybe being to judgemental isn't great . Thanks Dan |

Cert is from a reputable expertizing organization and its head (Randy Shoemaker) is an accomplished expert. Instead of a "better authentication company" perhaps you just needed a better prospective stamp. To my knowledge, used 112b does not exist, and there have been many attempts in the past at pressing out 112 grills in order to simulate a 112b, without success. You could send this to the PF or PSE but I strongly believe the outcome would be the same. Also, I can't quite make out the cert wording in the cert pic, but I think it just indicates a genuine used 112 with a certain cancel type. |

Going back to the original comment that started this thread what expert directed the op to submit this stamp. That is the question. There are two names nowadays that are vastly overused and those are hero and expert. Both are actually quite scarce but you would not know it from the way the salutations are thrown about. So, who was the expert in this case? |

Extremely strange, given the scarcity of true 112b. From PSAG site, I assume the OP's final fee was pegged to the $35 minimum. But, they charge an extra $35 for insurance/shipping and another $4 handling per item. So the tab gets bumped to $74.
Something not quite right about all this. |

Gee, you mean it wasn't the PF saying "send it in". As someone automatically assumed a while back in the thread. |

Quote: I emailed the expert with pictures and he thought I should send it to see if their were grills I wasnt going to but. I'd like to see a copy of the email in which this was said. (Addresses could be deleted.) I suspect we are playing "the telephone game" and the exact words were quite different. I suspect this because of the imprecision in most of the OP's posts in this thread. It's almost impossible to tell what really happened based on the informality of the language and the indefinite words that are used. |

Dan,
I cannot tell from this scan if this has grill. Typically, this is not an acceptable cancel on a stamp issued in 1880. You will have to submit this stamp in order for us to expertize. Randy Shoemake |

There are two diagonal creases. Just to the right of the right hand crease near the top there appears to be some indications of a grill. Right where Franklin's head is. |

I think we could go round and round about the process of who or what he did wrong or right but it just putting blame on some one it really doesn't matter all I care about is the process of figuring this stamp out and he was the first start, I thought. The way it sounds most likely it a mistake or a fake odds are not good. Im thinking to try and get someone else to have a go and figure it out ,I have a lot to think about and the stamp is not going anywhere for a while even if it is a fake. Thanks for all the help! It's not a fake, it's an ordinary 112 with a typical cancel for a 112. It happens to have a pressed out grill, which is a VERY common occurrence on this issue. If the grill was lightly impressed to begin with, just leaving it in an album for 40 or 50 years might easily do it, especially if the album was stored flat for some length of time. The stamp is 150 years old, who knows what happened to it in all that time.

Thank you for showing the certification, the telling of the rest of the interesting story coupled with a conclusion. Most satisfying. |

I would not ever carry a molecule of water for PSAG but to me, a for-profit business was being put in a position to provide free services. They can not be expected to screen submissions for free. That would only beget even more foolishness. |

I think I have a conclusion. How about a grill, I think I finally found , check it out. Thanks for all your help revcollector Thinking it must be very lightly grilled I decided to try and see if I could find it, so I got myself a black light and florescent light and played with it a bit and here is what I got, should have tried this sooner o'well. I do wonder about the crease I still don't know what you are talking about, sense I have a few creases on my stamps and I'm told once they are creased they are worthless . I have tried to press them out with no results I'm puzzled with that one is it possible to fix a crease maybe its called a fold? |
