Washington, Two Cents.. Error ???

Apart from the tear on the top right,
Is this an error stamp or is it, just badly damaged?
Thought i'd ask for any opinions before throwing it away

This is just a poor perforation. Not an error.
A small part of the next stamp at right is visible in the perf, which would make this a two-way perf shift. Undamaged its worth 25 cents... damaged, do the math.

I guessed it wouldnt be worth much.
I'm new to stamp collecting & trying to get as much info as poss about the stamps I have, so I can learn more about them.
Value hasn't really crossed my mind as I have 1000's of stamps to go through & im having a great time looking at all the beautiful,tiny pieces of art.

Well that's the real joy at the end of the day isn't it? Some of my favorite stamps are worth pennies. Some of my least favorites are worth thousands.
If you're just getting started, one thing I highly recommend then is looking at the Scott catalog site. You can get online reference catalogs, and only need to buy the countries you need.
