I found this in a stamp collection I inherited. What is it? Is it old? Is it worth anything?

It's a type of revenue stamp called an "Impressed Duty Stamp". Old - yes, worth something - maybe, but probably not a lot.

It's British. The cancel is gone which would have given us an exact date. There is a square paper seal ("cypher seal") stuck to the back of the document to protect that lead tin strip. If you can show that perhaps someone can give an approximate date. However, cypher seals fall off or are detached often enough.

I think you'll find the metal staple is tin.

It's pretty robust so I've always assumed the cypher is to stop the ends on the back scratching fingers or tables.

I ended up finding a few more sifting through the collection. Five are orange and have the metal insert. The date is obvious on some, but not on others. How old are the others?

Whoa! Nice collection there bpm.
The Heligoland mutilated stationery piece, is common, I would think.
The Jamaican is a lovely piece, for me.
They represent a very difficult and consuming discipline, should you decide to specialise.

To whet your appetite, peruse this page by our Dave Elsmore..........

Cypher=symbol; this is the royal symbol. Note the G R and 3 around the crown on at least a couple. That refers to George III who reigned 1760-1820.

There are tons and tons of documents from that time, so most of these are not rare at all; value also depends on type of revenue, etc.
