Hello Stamp world! I am new to stamp collecting, but have instantly fallen in love with it!! I am a collector of many many things, and I'm looking to find a reliable site that I can get started with to search the value of my new finds. I found a massive collection from the 1800s-1900s, and would love any guidance you could offer me!! Thanks in advance!

Welcome!

you might want to mention if its USA or Worldwide.

The best thing is to get a catalog or set of catalogs, and if its USA only the Scott US specialized is the go to for a lot of us folks.

Enjoy the hobby!

You are absolutely right when you say your fingers should not be touching the stamps.

The natural skin oils will, over time, transfer to the stamps and eventually cause damage.

The first item you need are a pair of stamp tongs. There are many types and if there is a stamp & coin store in your area, they would carry them. You can also order them on-line, but you don't get to hold them and see how they feel that way.

Good luck with your collection and welcome to the community!

your local library may have a set of Scott catalogs in the reference section you can use. There may be a local stamp club in your area as well. Check out the APS (American Philatelic Society) on your computer. good luck and welcome to the group.

I'd recommend getting a free copy of Mystic's stamp catalog. (However beware of the overpriced approvals they send along with it. I'd return them with a kind message stating you'd like to cancel the service.) Stampsmarter is a GREAT resource but sometimes it's easier to page through paper to find what you have.
