Probably a collectors mark.
Some collectors used to put a stamp on back of their stamps to show it was part of their collection, as anti theft/ownership. It's a terrible idea, and has largely fallen out of favor in these more enlightened modern times...

Something you want to keep in mind when looking at these stamps. The left hand image is a real stamp. The right hand image is a fake stamp.

I believe the author of the article has got the wrong information.

The example labelled as "genuine" in the cutting is a forgery.

It's both Ceresa's and Barefoot's "First Forgery".

Many articles have quoted one by Varo Tyler in 1983 in American Philatelist on this point (identifying the "First Forgery" as genuine) but he changed his view in a subsequent article in 1984.

I like the misperf.

In my experience most of the eagle stamps are reprints rather than forgeries.

There are at least three different forgeries.
