Actually, it's a US stamp that says Puerto Rico!

Issued on 27Apr1949 to commemorate the first gubernatorial election in Puerto Rico earlier that year.

Scott catalog value at 20c.

Nic - Puerto Rico is a self-governing unincorporated territory of the United States. It has a republican form of government subject to U.S. jurisdiction and sovereignty. Its current powers are all delegated by the United States Congress . Puerto Rico's head of state is the President of the United States. They hold elections every once in awhile to determine if the population wants Puerto Rico to become a state, but so far they have voted against it.

As such, Puerto Rico is very close to the US.

That's my geopolitical lesson for the day.

Is anyone surprised that Puerto Rico has not been issued stamps for their use? Seems like a logical request for the Puerto Ricans to make.

However, all of those were issued under Spanish authority, laswabbie (save the overprinted one)

Puerto Rico has been a US protectorate since the Spanish-American War of 1898

Yes I meant in the modern era. It just seems that the local population in Puerto Rico would want their own stamps. I think that they also use US currency.
