Hi, since this is my first post, I'd do a short introduction. I had started collecting stamps around the 80s but the hobby died down. As I went to my store room recently, I revisited my album. Hence, I do need some help to identify any stamps that are worth at least an ounce of silver. Thank you for your help.

Welcome.

How are you in your collecting skills? Do you know all the countries and are just looking for values? Or are you needing help in identification of the actual countries, too? If you know the countries, and are located in the US, a nearby public library will probably have copies of the Scott catalagues in the reference section. You can spend a few hours flipping through the catalogues identifying the easiest issues. Other countries may have catalogues in local libraries, as well.

If you literally are looking for stamps that will buy an ounce of silver, you'll likely be going through a lot of stamps...not that it isn't worth doing.

Good luck.

Actually when I was clearing my store room, I had wanted to thrash the entire album but just in case there was something that is worth an ounce of silver then I would cash in. All the above pictures were from my album that were already categorized in countries. I was below 10 when I started and stopped when I was before 16. So I can say my collecting skills are non-existence. For coins, it seems easier to identify since they have years stamped on them but stamps seems really difficult. And what makes a stamp rare or hard to find?

What makes a stamp valuable?

The normal market forces of supply and demand. These are all functions of scarcity, interest, condition, fashion etc etc. understanding that unlike many gold and silver coins, stamps have no "intrinsic" value.

Although you haven't inherited these stamps, you might, nevertheless, want to take a look at http://www.inheritedstampcollection.com/index.html

Its a quick read and what you will see is that it is the rare stamp, issued after 1940 or so, that has much value and unless you've put value into a collection, it is unlikely that you'll find much value today, despite the passage of all these years. The one thing that does not drive value is the actual age of the stamps.

If it turns out that there isn't much value here, you still have options to explore which the link will highlight for you.

Most of the stamps in the pic are common (catalog for <$1). There are a few that might catalog for a few bucks, but I don't see anything in there that is in the $100+ range.

Maybe someone else might see something.

From the cursory look presented here. Unless what is not here is a lot better, my guess is that you won't have an ounce of silver in the entire lot. That being said, you won't know unless you thoroughly explore the market and see what you can get for it or digging in and taking it apart a stamp at a time, having fun, getting an education, and perhaps finding that elusive valuable variety amongst your common stamps.
