I have a tough time trying to see stamp watermarks. I tried out something which may be useful. I held the stamp facing away from me, against the window. I then took a picture with the highest resolution. Opened it in a HD TV screen and zoomed in. When I played with the color and lighting I was able to see the watermark. (Increased the color and reduced the light). Not that clear but enough to see if it is inverted or on its side. I hope this helps.
Yes I always take a cell-phone snapshot, it helps especially in magnifying it to look for other distinguishing factors--thins, sealed tears, paper inclusions, hidden flaws etc. Front AND back, in different lighting.
