The spreadsheets give a good summary, thank you.

I am having trouble understanding your headings for each set of printings.

My understanding is that the terms Typographed and Electrotype are interchangeable and have the same meaning. Early in the preparation of the plating guides we decided to use the term Electrotype.

The plates for all the printings were based on the De La Rue plates according the Messrs Purves and Lancaster, supported by a small number of very minor printing imperfections which were transferred. The reason they did not use the De La Rue plates was because they were not compatible with the Melbourne printing equipment.

The stereotype plates are now thought to actually be Electrotype, but on a softer metal.

I have used the headings from the Stanley Gibbons catalogue to align with the SG numbers referred to in the spreadsheet.

The Typographed plates are distinguished as electrotyped (Victoria Government Printing Office, Melbourne) and stereotyped (Commonwealth Stamp Printing Branch, Melbourne) in the 2019 Commonwealth and British Empire Stamps 1840-1970 catalogue.

Have the experts provided Stanley Gibbons with the new information about the type of typographed plates used in the last printing?

Not sure which SG you are using but mine shows different descriptions.

From SG Australia 9th edition;


1. 1902 Typo from SG: "Typo, using electrotyped plates" no mention of transfer from electrotyped plates.

2. 1905 from SG: "Typo, using electrotyped plates" no mention of transfer from electrotyped plates.

3. 1911 from SG "Typo using stereotyped plates" no mention of 'transfer'.

Also:

SG have this wrong, 1902 Litho went to 1905 (plates 19/22) earliest CDS seen 12/4/05.

Thanks Tasnaki - my 'copy and paste' error with the 'transfers' - I will edit them - the corrected version will be on the next update of numbers.

The heading above (1905) SG 245 on the spreadsheet says Litho using transfers from DLR plates - is that not correct?

The reference to De La Rue is correct, in fact all the plates for both Lithograph, Electrotpye and Stereotype used the De La Rue plates.
