Hello Everyone
I have this Franklin 476a and was wondering what this stamp was worth.
I know there are only 200 known and all are new none are used I guess.
This one has a postmark that looks like a SS on it.
Its a funny stamp it looks like it was double papered on the back side because of the wrinkle's .A very interesting stamp I dont see any watermark but check it out.
I dont know what happened it wont upload any images.
I will post them later .

I do not see a Sc listed 476a. There is a Sc 476A orange red unused but no used pricing. If you meant 476A then you believe you have a discovery used copy? Will you obtain a certification?

None are known. One of the four expertizing committees in the United States does not believe that 476A exists. One does not have the necessary equipment. The other two are likely to find the watermark with their VSC machine.

Hello Everyone;
I dont know where to start but first I want to tell you about this stamp that know body
seems to know about this 476A used.
If you have this stamp it sounds like if you send it in to get certified it most likely won't be certified a 476A.
The reason is even if it has no watermark or appears to be no watermark hard to prove unless you have
a attached stamp to it with no watermark.

Here is what they say I assume its Scott's .
ll copies of Scott 476A are unused with full gum. Certified genuine copies of this rarity must generally be in multiples to prove that there is no trace of a watermark. This stamp was not recognized with a Scott catalog number until 1957. Since then only two full panes, one partial pane and one plate number single have been certified as genuine -- meaning that, at most, only five or six copies with plate number have been found.

I was wondering what about all the other unwatermarked stamps do they need to be attached to
or have a record to be verified ,this is crazy. There must be a better way to do this verification .
I also have found a member here at the Stamp Community which have sent their stamp to get certified .
His stamp I've seen doesn't look to have a watermark either was sent back twice ,I don't know if it was the same company ,but not telling "why" I really don't think that is right.
They really need to tell you why or whats going on with it you see it or you don't make a judgement !!
And that's what I think.
Thanks Again
for listening
Dan

Dan,

I see enough smudges on your image to suggest that the stamp has a faint watermark. At NAPEX I demonstrated to a dealer that his "unwatermarked 491" was really a watermarked 454 by dipping the stamp to get it wet and then removing it from the fluid and then dropping it back in. The watermark popped into view. PSE, PSAG and PF have a visual spectral comparator that can do the same job quickly and efficiently. The 476A stamps in the two sheets have the position number recorded on the back. And, other unwatermarked stamps of the period are almost as difficult. I am convinced that someone with a VSC can find more watermarks than anyone using fluid.

I suggest that the moderators close this thread sooner rather than later.

Clark,

Before moving on, I think there's an important question that needs consideration. Accepting for a moment the premise that there is no reason the survival rate of #476A as intact panes should be any different than for the watermarked issue (#439) in full panes, wouldn't it be reasonable to assume, for discussion purposes, that the ratio of #476A to #439 in intact panes, as existed at the time the #476A was discovered, should also be reflected in the overall used single population? For example, if the two panes found to be unwatermaked were from a total population of 20 thirty-cent panes, that scenario would suggest 10% of all perf 10 30-cent Franklins were issued on unwatermarked paper. Restricting the recognition of an issue to unused multiples exclusively may have created a rare stamp from something that may in reality exist in numbers hardly considered scarce. BTW a decently-centered NH pane of Scott #439, the "common" watermarked issue, would part out (singles and plate blocks) at around $50,000 today - hardly a common item, if any still exist.

Thank you
Tipzi and cfrphoto for your input.
It sounds like a long shot being a 476A it may have a watermark,I wish there was another way to identify this stamp like the cancel or postmark its a oval with either 55 or SS on this postmark or perhaps the double paper backing maybe you could compare with other stamps just like this one.

1. Watermarks on brightly colored stamps are difficult to see under the best of conditions. For that reason, expertizers were unwilling to certify any used copies and because the cancel could obscure the watermark. Someone with a VSC might be able to make a case for an unwatermarked single.
2. Some speculate that most of the unwatermarked sheets were precancelled.
3. Some don't believe that any of the perf 10 30˘ were printed on unwatermarked paper. At one time I owned two examples and I could not find a watermark. It is reported that early batches of unwatermarked paper had partial "S" watermarks because the watermark letters were not completely burnished off the dandy roll. The shape of the "S" found by PSE on a 476A example suggests that it could be a partial S juxtaposed with a swamp spot or a natural thin. Early unwatermarked paper of the period looks uneven in watermark fluid.

Given the odds you might be better served purchasing lottery tickets with the cert money.

Chances are greater that Bigfoot would be rummaging through my garbage cans in the back yard and Beyoncé would be ringing my front doorbell looking for a date.
