i generaly dont collect stamps but bought a collection from a widow whos husband had collected for many years and had passed away. I am trying to list and value each 4 stamp block as well as the full sheets of stamps. I try to find the lowest price, mostley Mystic stamps, online to attatch a value to them. is this a fair way to gauge a value of the collection? thanks

If you can not be more specific, you can always go to ebay and see what this sort of items sold for. Almost anything has been sold there

Mystic being high retail is unrealistic for what the stamps will fetch.

Reading between the lines, you have apparently bought U.S. material. The vast majority of U.S. stamps issued since the 1930s were printed in huge quantities and are still readily available in blocks and sheets - and at a substantial discount off of the face value. The lower face value stamps being discounted more in the discount postage marketplace due to their decreased usability at add up to 55 cents. Rather than looking up each piece for the very few premium items, it would be far faster to add up the total face value of the mint stamps up to 9 cents and the total face at 10 cents and above (or at a 15 or 20 cent cut-off). Then a discount can be easily calculated for what you might expect from a dealer or the cost to essentially replace the same collection in today's marketplace. Yes, a discount, as the marketplace is flooded with discount postage.
