The Eosin inks were very short lived ink used late in the 1917 and early 1918. The full eosin ink stamps are rare. Their is some people in the know at the cutting edge of how this ink was used and I am not one of them. The word is that the eosin inks were more widely used than first thought with part mixes being used? During the WWI Germany was the only country in the world to sell red ink. As supplies of red ink ran out the stamp printer had to mix inks to get some sort of a red shade. I have done this....... Quote: A Mr Blogg in the 1920s docummented the cream of 2 million penny reds & described 422 shades.
The lack of red ink from Germany during WWI led the Australian Penny Red Printer to mix inks. Blues, purples, pinks, yellows, brown etc. These caused many shade groups. Maybe we can call Mr Blogg the first penny red Bloggist. KGV

KGV, Are you a royal supporter then KGV? I collect George V exclusively at present. I am concentrating on English shades at the moment. Do you have many of these? |

xyL, Where do you get the material to search for shades? I am particularly fond of the first issue of the George V profile (the replacement for the Downey heads) The number of shades is very large. Unfortunately, a few are way out of my budget, but most of the shades are quite reasonable. If you trust the identification of the shades, you can get them from either Arthur Ryan in London, or Mark Sargent, also in England, but I don't recall the location. |

Thank you for your question xyL. A Royalist? No I am more a convict from the colonies! But KGV is to me a very special person in stamping and shaped our great hobby so all of us are Kings and Queens.
One of the ways he helped us to be Kings and Queens in stamping in Aussie was he made a persons stamp collection not an asset.
So I can claim half of what I sell my stamps for as a non taxable income or if I was selling just for fun no tax to be payed at all. Which helps my family a great deal.
I would love to collect all KGV stamps of the commonwealth but the cost keeps me to Australian KGVs and I have had a lot of great years as a collector. Most of them as an isolated collector until I found SCF. Some of my best childhood memories is sorting kiloware of KGV Reds for other people.
Australia is a very different place compared to the rest of the world. Our KGV penny reds are very special. |

Dear Ro Humpy, That is a knotty one, as no mention of it is made in my in depth George V Gibbons catalogue. I tend to think it is the devising of dealers. I use John Lamonby primarily and sometimes Dauwalders. I have never dealt with Sargent, so cannot comment. Arthur Ryan I do not use since he sent my father the wrong stamps and refused to refund him. Alas now my father is dead so I hope Arthur enjoys his money [about £11:00]. I bought my biggest shades bargains from Rob Guest of Barnsley. His prices are unbeatable. By the way are we allowed to do this? Mention names and so forth? I would have emailed you, but apparently, though the system is in place we are not allowed to use it. I only found out when I went to do so the other day and received a warning! |

KGV, I can never tell with you if you are being sardonic or bitter. Do you regret that you are Australian?
I don't know how you are placed but Commonwealth stamps are cheap in England, there again cheap is a relative term. bidStart has some great Commonwealth bargains at the moment.
I thought Australia had very close links with America, so it should be a good site for you. |

Quote: By the way are we allowed to do this? Mention names and so forth? Names are mentioned all the time. Good to know who to deal with, knowledge beyond one's own experience. Always useful and helpful. Quote: I would have emailed you, but apparently, though the system is in place we are not allowed to use it. The email through the forum system is only available when both sender and receiver have 50 posts and 2 weeks in at least. perhaps this was what happened at the time? Quote: KGV, I can never tell with you if you are being sardonic or bitter. Do you regret that you are Australian? From my own experience and travels I feel that, generally speaking, Australians are some of the most 'real' people on our planet. They appreciate life in a very deep way that some of the rest of us do not do. Their view of life is very relaxed and laid back seemingly, but if you do not happen to appreciate life to the extent they do then watch out because they will not stop their love of appreciating life just for you. |

xyL, sorry for the bad experience your dad had with Arthur Ryan. I have ordered many times from them and never had a problem with wrong stamps. Considering the stamps have to come from London to Georgia, their service is remarkably fast. I suppose I could plow through ebay and order just the KGV profiles and hope for a selection of shades. I agree, the used ones are far more interesting than the mint. |

KGV Collector, are you able to confirm that this 1d red (W5) is the rough paper SG47? I was hoping for a rusted cliche but the date's wrong (1919) and the patches are all over the place. Nice compartment lines though! |

Hi jubilee.
With the amount of ink disturbances on that stamp it is beyond me.
But a nice stamp I would put in my tin shed collection, with 4 compartment lines to boot. |
