Cjd, thanks mate! It was great to see Rod's reaction to the gem of information on the A.I.F overprint. This overprint looks like it is in very limited numbers & hard to find. Very interesting. Bet those stamps on covers cost a fortune.

I've travelled halfway around the world to S.C.F & have finally found a stamp group of extreme quality. Surprisingly I am finding out more about K.G.Vs than ever before. Now I am not just an isolated self~taught collector. Very humbling. KGVC.

That's a nice "squared circle" part cancellation there KG5
Mount (Mt) Pleasant South Australia.
Those squared circle strikes are darn cute.

This is a KG5 that as yet, has not been explained.
It is one of my first discoveries, long ago, and I had a hand held scanner.

Tasmanian Geo Adams Lottery stamp
printed on the back with "Tatter-sall" in two lines.

The query is, how did Tattersalls get the printing on the underside of the Gum?
Were they Government sanctioned?

Hi Rod.

Very interesting. A more dynamic approach to overprints that I will look for. 2d red mint. Amazing find.

The squared circle postmark is impressive. It's nice to know what to call it. Thanks.

Are the names on postmarks a separate category? Have always thought that a post code book could help but it's not a catalogue approach. Could be very good for a decimal collector.

Postmarks overall are starting to make a bit of sense. They seem to fall into a list of types. For me this is deep enough. A basic understanding will take me a long way without the endless variety hanging around one's neck. Thanks for your help. KGV.

Well, I suppose they could be KG5
It is hard for me to answer, as I have only scratched the surface,
but I guess you may have, or even invent your own special classification.
State Postmarks: wa,nsw, queensland etc & etc.
Style Postmarks: "Squared Circle" (in my view the most beautiful of all postmarks, but don't ask me why :)
"piecrust" and "butterfly" postmarks
Aboriginal name related Postmarks:
"Barred Numeral" cancels (there are catalogues for these)
"DPO" Dead Post Offices-those that no longer exist.
"Auxilliary" postmarks
"Name Changed" postmarks (PO's that have been renamed over time)
"Relief" postmarks (canceller in for repair or lost)
"TPO" traveling post office postmarks (rail)
"Roller cancels"
Forged cancels
....and the list goes on

Probably, the best bet is to scan any stamp you have that arouses curiosity, or that you think is particularly worth recalling,
dump them all in a folder Australia / Postmarks
and over time you will probably revisit as you read things on forums
like this that you may add to your general knowledge.
Happy and good fortune in your new branch collection

I'll leave you with your shopping list

Hi Rod!

Thanks heaps for the info. Even names on postmarks go over the top. I have a very primitive collecting system in place & did not know how close I am. To make one's own system is advice well given to me; a very exciting dynamic! I'm a bit embarrassed to tell you how long I have been trying to make sense of postmarks.

Images: Block of 4 "Lord Howe Island postmark" & possibly a bottom row booklet example.

The "squared circle" strike that impressed me & started a long journey. Thank you again. KGV

G'day KG5,
never be embarrased about not knowing something,
be embarrassed about not asking something
When I started, I asked about an Italian stamp I thought was a postage Due, when in fact the "Due" was Italian for two

Two cracking postmarks there, beautiful stuff.
For archiving I use a marriage of two things,
1: Include in your scan image name a text string that includes all the info that you need to resucitate the image when required.

For example your lovely EUDUNDA postmark, have something like
(hypothetical)
SG46a (1931) 02d KG5 red [eudunda sa] squared circle [cut square].jpg

Next download the Free "Agent Ransack" search software
http://download.cnet.com/Agent-Rans...0043846.html

From then on all you have to do, is to click on the Agent Ransack icon and put in the text string required

Lets say "KG5" that will immediately select every KG5 image on your computer, perhaps "squared", again it will isolate every squared circle postmark on your computer, and so on.

I use it for ID'ing difficult orphan stamps
recently I had a Bahrain Postal Tax stamp that only had Arabic script, part of it to me looked like "uii" so I included that in my image name.
Now when it came to re-identify that stamp for someone, I immediately reconised that little "uii" on the stamp,
I whacked it in Ransacks text search, and it searched my stamp image database of 152,004 stamps, and had it in 3 seconds.

Just some advice you may wish to take on board, it is not obligatory

I just whacked in "Lord Howe" and this is what I got.

Francis Chichester and Lord Howe Island cover with 2s overprint (famous)
Lord Howe Island "Zemail" ??? Zero emmissions stamp.
with "traffic lights"

Good fortune in your journey
(again, two lovely postmarks of yours)

"Zemails" with "traffic lights"

BTW KG5 not sure I agree with the booklet suggestion,
can we see perfs there at the bottom of the quad?
Or are you going on other info?
Cheers

Hi Rod.

Yes, I believe you are very right. Perfs & an angled cut show up very clearly when I click on. Used digital magnifier on postmark & not part perfed area. Thanks, mate. KGV.

KG5
I attended a local auction tonight, picked up some nice revs,
nice cinderellas, and sundry flotsam and jetsam.

I nearly reached Nirvana I managed 2 issues from the first edition of "The Australian Stamp News" 1930
Issue 3 and I am here to tell you, I am Sylvester who has nearly caught Tweety. So I have most of the 1930 editions, My Life's quest.

One Item caught my eye, it went over my head but you may be able to decipher it.

"Aust 1d Red Roo (3) with varieties R 1/3 & R 5/4 (Plates H)
R 1/3, (Plate F) you .....Value $80
Not bad for 3 KG5's ?
Rod

Rod: It's extremely rewarding to get *the* buy at auction that you have been searching a long time for. To complete a set is what we are all looking at doing. Crumbed tweety bird sounds like a good option on your menu. Never been to an auction. The post is my angle but one day I'll attend one of my favourite auctions in Sydney: *Philas*. They have one upcoming & I'm overextended as usual.

Have not got a cat that does justice to these roos but the "H" plates are very costly in cat [2004]. "F" plate is a bit lower cat val. Yes, very good buys. The stamp news magazines are worth far more than money to you I reckon. Great stuff. KGV
