Amazing stuff Michael. Whenever there is a hint of a postal strike, a thousand dormant private printing machines must start to get edgy :)

Yes Rod, but I wonder what kind of garish labels we'd get today if another major strike occurred. If they were anything like the modern day Scout Post labels, I would give up on them ! |

An interesting Strike Label from 1971 landed on my desk today. Printed in Spain for the London Post Delivery service of Madrid, for use on air mail to London. Both Perf [11] and Imperf. Printed in Blue on different coloured papers, in sheetlets of 9. Some sheetlets had errors from one of the printings. It is one of those errors I show you now. This was sent to me from Spain [ ] and he did an excellent job on the cover including a miniature sheet and other stamps. Some do care. Londonbus1 |

Along with those Swedish Flag day stamps just posted on the 'Flags' thread, were these two additions to one of my favourite 1971 Strike Post issues. Yes, I got all gooey-kneed on these too ! I just love them. I can offer no explanation. I just do. An Imperf pair and an Imperf between pair [Vertically]. The latter has rough horizontal perfs. Please don't tell the wife about these, they weren't cheap ! Yes, I've got it bad, I know. Londonbus1...sssshhhhhhh! |

These are brilliant! And what a timely thread to revive in light of our Canadian situation. Makes me wish we'd been more creative and innovative the last couple of weeks, rather than whiney! My only complaint (and there had to be one, right?) is the Dromedary post on the first page shows a Bactrian camel. There I go whining again. |

Nice sheet Russ ! This is most likely one of the many labels and sheets that were issued for collectors and didn't see Postal Use, although FDC's exist. Part of the Public Mail Service, this Mayflower Mail Service sheet was issued on the Last day of the Sterling Currency use. A Rouletted Label of the same design and denomination was also printed. They were supposedly meant for mail to the USA,Canada and South America. Whilst on my UK trip these past two weeks, I managed to find a good number of Strike Mail labels I hadn't previously seen and will post them when I get organised.

Rod,
That one was issued on Jan 29th and was one of many issued by the Public Mail Services. One of a small number of private delivery companies who were allowed by the Post Office to clear their backlog of mail even though the temporary licenses granted to them had been suspended. Some bigger private companies were given an extra week by the Post Office after the strike ended, to finish their deliveries.

Fascinating LB, I'll put it in the write up, I wonder how the PO made value judgements on these private companies? cheers for that, I am glad I purchased it then, :) Paid $1 for it yesterday.

I think that these may fit here. Please let me know if I'm wrong and I'll take them down. If anyone has any information on where and when they were printed, I'd be grateful for it. Thanks! |

Quote: I think that these may fit here Indeed they do ! They were the 2nd of three issues organized by Urchin Post of London in conjuction with Stadspost,Amsterdam most likely organized by the latter for deliveries to the Netherlands. Saw actual postal use. Issued on February 17th, 1971. Issued on the same day was a set of 5 'To Pay' labels inscribed with both Urchinpost and Stadspost Amsterdam with the 'To Pay' and value overprinted in the colours of the stamps shown by datorrey. No scan yet, sorry. Interesting issue, thanks for showing and adding to the pile. Londonbus1 |
