Yes, I'm brand new and came here for some assistance. My mother handed me various items from my childhood yesterday and included in that package was a group of 2-cent Washington embossed stamped envelopes. I do not know how to identify which stamp it is and what the value may be. I read in another online forum that some of these envelopes have "US" and a date embossed on the envelope as well. I cannot find that on these envelopes. I'm attaching a few pictures for your review. More than happy to include whatever else you need to help me identify. Thank you!

Welcome.

There are a number of varieties of this envelope (see below), the most common varieties are worth around 50 cents each.

The Scott Catalogue of US Stamps and Covers has examples of watermarks on envelopes. You can usually see them on an envelope if you look through the paper with a light behind it. Some examples of watermarks as published in Scott:

thank you for the watermark page. Again, I have held these envelopes to the light and even shown a flashlight behind them and cannot find a watermark of any sort.

Have you tried looking inside the envelope while holding the envelope near a light bulb? An intense light may be needed to see a watermark. It can not be seen through a closed envelope.

Cheryllynn,

Here are some examples in context to show the approximate size and wide spacing of what you are looking for. There may be only one or two complete US marks on any envelope - or just fractions as the envelopes were cut.

Also, the watermark may be very faint like this example.

Bottom line, most U.S. envelopes are made in very large quantities and thus very common. Very few of them are scarce or rare. I get several of these in the mail each year from collectors using them up with additional postage, of course.

Your envelope is a (Scott #) U429, Die 1.

In addition to the watermark (as mentioned above), it can be very useful to include a scan of the reverse side of the envelope.

Sometimes the size of the envelope can be useful (size: width x length in millimeters.)
