Welcome.
They are authentic, they printed 11 billion of them in 1902. You can learn more here http://stampsmarter.com/1847usa/190...ntifier.html

Try and find the Scott catalogs in your Public Library (if it is open). They are necessary to correctly identify any stamp . Even with a catalog, it is sometimes not easy. Do not trust the internet for correct IDs.

Hi Mastaluk5,
In my opinion you do not need a catalog, everything you need to know on your stamps is available on the Stamp Smarter website.

There are a lot of clueless ebay listings, investment blogs, and other online resources which say or imply that stamps are rare. But in general stamp are as common as rocks with a few rare varieties. But you can safely assume that any stamp you find is a common variety. (This is the same thing you would do if you walked into your back yard and picked up a rock, you would not assume that it was a diamond.) Stamp collecting is a great hobby and has a lot to offer in the way of learning history, other cultures, and art. But windfalls are more common with lotteries than with stamps.
