Hello All

First stamp: (not cancelled)
Is this an R6b? I can see that it has been trimmed on top and left. What say you?
But also, more strangely is the blurriness and overall appearance. Especially the U.S.Intern.Rev. and Bank Check. Possible double transfer? Or "Just a poor muddy impression from a well used plate." What happened here?

Second stamp: (cancelled)
This stamp has a straight top edge. Doesn't looked trimmed. Is it a R6b?

Thanks for any and all replies.

Yes, the paper was much too wet when the stamp was printed; it's a muddy print. And yes, the second stamp was trimmed. First issues had selvage on all four sides, and had no natural straight edges except when the sheets were not perforated just inside the four margins, which happened moderately often. Which is one reason that part perfs with one large top, bottom, or side margin but close on the opposite margin do not automatically have to be genuine.

If I didn't know any better, I'd almost think the first one is counterfeit??????????

Poorly printed, probably early during the time when they were under great pressure from the government. There are two known counterfeits, the one cent Proprietary, and the $3 Manifest.

The poorly printed stamp actually does have one of the minor double transfers found on this stamp. It is noticeable at the bottom of the letters in "bank check" where they extend below where they should. A fairly common double transfer.
