The meter date is October 2, 1953.

This was after the elimination of sen, so the postage amount is 70 yen.

Based on a quick glance at my catalog, the rates at that time for a domestic letter was 10 yen, and for an international letter was 30 yen, for minimum weight (I'm just guessing, but maybe 20 grams for domestic and 10 grams for international?), so this might have either been a heavier domestic item or an international letter of modest weight.

The issuing post office for the metering machine (I'm assuming the post office where the meter account was held) was the Osaka Central Post Office (that's in the Japanese writing to the left of the '70', and I'm guessing that was Pitney Bowes meter #2 for that office.

Take none of this as gospel, except possibly the date and the usage of yen. Everything else is presumption, and I would welcome any correction or refinement of that information.

Great link Perf 12. I did not realize, but guess I should not be surprised, that a catalog for these existed. Somewhere in the boxes there is a large bag of metered savings that can now be identified.
Thanks for posting.

Dear all, some additions to observations by Philatarium;

The postage fee of 70 Yen at October 1953 (Showa 28) is very likely to be the international airmail letter, up to 10g to "Region 3", which includes Hawaii, Canada, United States and Australia.

Another possibility (less likely though) could be international airmail printed matter and braille matters, up to 20g to "Region 4", which includes European countries.

Further candidates may include the following domestic rates;

- septuple weight (i.e. up to 70g) normal letter (10 Yen + 6 x 10 Yen) (... very unlikely though)
- normal letter up to 10g (10 Yen) + registered mail up tp 1000 Yen value (35 Yen) + express (25 Yen) (... this might be more realistic)

FYI, The postal rate, especially that for international airmail in the 40s and 50s is pretty complicated, with lots of amendment / changes occurring in relatively short time spans. The regions for international airmail applicable to this meter stamp (from July 1, 1953 to March 31, 1959) is as follows:

- Region 1 : mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Korea (Choson)
- Region 2: Guam, Burma, Malaya, Philippines, Thai, Alaska
- Region 3: Asian countries excluding those covered in Region 1 and 2, Hawaii, Canada, - mainland United States, Australia
- Region 4: New Zealand, the Near East, Central/South America, European countries, North Africa, USSR
- Region 5: African countries excluding those covered in Region 4

Best wishes,
Hironobu (unechan)
